24H Virtual Daytona – We’re ready!
Daytona – Scene of several motor sport highlights, where even the greats earned their stripes. Who can’t recall the overall winners of the first 24-hour race in ’66, Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby, steering the Ford GT 40 Mk. II to victory. Just thinking about this brutal machine conjures up the intense smell of gasoline, engine oil and hot tires on rough tarmac – not to mention the thunderous quake of the 7.0-liter V8 engine. A lot has changed since then and real racing has been joined by another testament to sporting performance: sim racing.
Prior to the 24 Hours of Daytona, the international speedway in its virtual form, will hold the 2021 edition of iRacing’s fifth running of the prominent swap/team feature, seeing hundreds of participants joining the around the clock sim race. The ultimate test of technological endurance may not demand car components to last the harrowing distance. However, the mental focus required to last the entire race and the difficulties that can also arise with technical infrastructure prove that this is no mere game. The sheer number of participants speak for itself – this race is BIG.
